Yes it was carved. To speed things up I drilled holes then used a narrow jig saw. But most was done by chisel and rasp. Big hint. To smooth things out in the narrow openings buy some belt sander belts. Cut them into ribbons .3 inch wide then pull them back and forth in the openings.
